The Sport Club Portuguese started to develop back in 1920. Portuguese residents that lived in Newark gathered and discussed starting a club that would allow friends of the Portuguese people of Newark to meet at a facility not only to get to know one another better, but also to take time to honor and also dignify the Portuguese that lived in the United States. The first of their meeting was held to discuss the formation of their idea. At their first meeting there was approximately twenty-eight Portuguese present. After a year of meetings and careful planning, the Portuguese club was officially opened on seventeenth day of December 1921. The incorporation became official a little more than a year later on April sixth, 1922. The club originally started out as a theater with a sports section plus an Orchestra which was composed with several elements. Approximately two-hundred of the Portuguese immigrants, the majority consisted of men, were all members within the Sports Club Portuguese (SCP) at that time. Almost all of the Portuguese residents living in Newark were members of the Sports Club Portuguese. Interestingly, because there were few Portuguese women in Newark during that time, at times the ladies roles in the theater group at the Sports Club Portuguese were played by men.
Today
Today the Sports Club Portuguese has a banquet hall and a theater stage. Decorations include tiles that were imported directly from Portugal. Also are scenes from Port Discoveries. Besides all of the physical remodeling that the Sports Club Portuguese under went, they also saw an increase of youth in its membership. Many new members of the Sports Club Portuguese were university students who came to give a new younger life to the Sports Club Portuguese. Several of these youths rose quickly to leadership positions. By 2009, there were so many youths that were members of the Sports Club Portuguese, it was decided that the youths should be composed of two groups. The first group would be the “Juniors” that would range in age from 12 to 17 and the second group would range in age from 18 to 25, and called the “Juventude” group. The injection of the younger Portuguese members really helped with the success and the bright future for the Sports Club Portuguese.
The Sports Club Portuguese is truly a success story. Recently there are so many organizations and clubs that are trying to stay afloat since the economic down turn, with some unfortunately closing. From the dedication of its members and its appeal to new members, the Sports Club Portuguese has continued to grow and prosper even in rough economic times. With Sports Club Portuguese also located in the United States, it is certain that preservation of the Portuguese and their culture will be guaranteed. To help preserve and teach the Portuguese culture, there are now various sections that are all part of the Sports Club Portuguese.
